Levels of Nursing Home Care
Nursing homes provide around-the-clock professional medical care for patients with chronic illnesses or patients recovering from acute illnesses who need skilled nursing care but do not need to be hospitalized. Also known as long-term care facilities, nursing homes vary by the level of care provided. Nursing homes provide three levels of care: Skilled care, Intermediate care, and Custodial care...

At Many Homes, More Profit and Less Nursing
For this article, The New York Times analyzed trends at nursing homes purchased by private investment groups by examining data available from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, a division of the Department of Health and Human Services.

What if it happened to you?
It has been a staple of Stephen Wise's political career.

As a state representative and senator representing North Florida since 1998, he consistently has fought against trial lawyers and for medical malpractice reform.

He repeatedly has voted for measures that make it tougher for people to take medical institutions to court - and to limit the amount of potential damages if they end up there.

In particular, he has focused on nursing homes...

Taking Advantage of the Elderly

There is an unsettling trend lately in which businesses and investors
search for ways to profit from the growing older American population.
One current practice involves the purchase of major nursing home chains
by private investors. The article below includes the study of 1200
nursing homes purchased by such groups since 2000. The study found that
nursing homes owned by large investment companies scored below the
national average scores on 12 of 14 indicators used to measure
residents' conditions.

According to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services,
investor-owned nursing homes average 1) more residents per clinical
registered nurse, 2) higher incidences of serious health deficiencies,
3) greater percentages of long-stay residents whose need for daily
activities of living have increased, and 4) higher percentages of
long-stay residents who are more depressed or anxious than the national
averages vs. the national averages.

Large investment groups have purchased 6 out of the 10 largest nursing
home chains, representing over 141,000 beds, or 9% of the total beds in
the United States. Read this important article which appeared in the
